Today we took a trip to Pompeii and literally traveled back in time. As a kid in school I always hated history class but today I was fascinated.
Pompeii 2,000 years ago was a bustling city located in the southern half of Italy, but in the summer of 79 AD, nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted. It blew toxic gas and ash 20 miles into the air and in less than 24 hours, the entire city was buried under a blanket of ash. Some escaped, but 2,000 Pompeiians did not have time to flee as they were overcome by the toxic ash cloud, killing them in under 15 minutes. Ash continued to fall, burying the city and the people there, in 9ft of volcanic material and mud. This layer of volcanic material is actually what preserved the buildings, artwork and even people. All of this helped scientist to further understand the city, its prosperity and the fact that it was a popular vacationing spot for the wealthy Romans.
I was so impressed with the paved streets and the higher side walls surrounding the city. There were numerous public baths, gladiators, chariot races, an amphitheater and two theaters where plays were performed. The artworks, paintings and decorations are amazing. It was obviously a place of sexual freedom and exploitation. One things for certain, Italian men were very proud.
I will stop my writing here and try to give you a glimpse of this lost city. If you are ever in Italy, it is a must see place on your visit, whether you’re a historian or not. They say Mount Vesuvius is over due for another major explosion. Hopefully people who live near the volcano will receive proper warning and will learn from the past and evacuate.
